Earth is Losing Atmosphere Every Day

Posted on 18 May 2013 by Christian Rivera

I would hope that we would assume at this point that nothing lasts forever. Not even our atmosphere is going to be sitting around until the end of time. With the atmosphere gone then well, there goes us, too. It turns out that anyone who fears this scenario has a semi-rational fear since we are losing atmosphere all the time, but total depletion won’t happen in our lifetime.  ”Our”, meaning, the human race.

MinuteEarth explains that the process is very slow and chances are we’ll be long gone before its ever complete. One day a distant traveler will look at our planet and wonder, was there ever life there?

See Lightning Strike at 11,000 Frames Per Second

Posted on 14 May 2013 by Christian Rivera

High speed cameras really offer scientists the opportunity to really observe their craft in more detail than ever before. Lightning is a perfect example of something that really requires this type of technology to really observe every little bit of activity involved in the natural phenomenon. Lightning is so fast that when you capture it in front of an american flag, the flag seems to stop while the lightning seemingly strikes at full speed.

The video shows you what it’s like to see lightning at 11,000 frames per second and it’s quite a show! Lightning physicist Vladislav Mazur and meteorologist Tom Warner takes us through a lightning strike from start to finish seen in more detail than ever before.

Vertical Forest in Milan Almost Complete

Posted on 10 May 2013 by Christian Rivera

vertical forest

A two tower apartment complex with 400 residents in Milan is close to be complete as a vertical forest. The face of the building will be covered with 730 trees, 5,000 shrubs, and 11,000 perennial plants. It is expected to have the same ecological impact as 10,000 square meters of forest.

The plants will also provide insulation for the residents. A pretty cool story.

NFL Helmets Go Through Some Pretty Extensive Testing

Posted on 07 May 2013 by Christian Rivera

footballtests

Gizmodo shared a great story about how football helmets are tested for concussions.

A group of scientists proved that modern football helmets are better than the old leather ones. That would seem obvious, but they have a device that they used for testing this data and it’s pretty crazy.

Scientists associated with Virginia Tech found that 10 modern helmets performed much better at reducing the force brought onto the skull from various types of impact. The results improved concussion risk from 45 to 96%! We would hope that’s true, since the leather helmets are 80 years old. Still good to know.

Gizmodo writes:

The study was undertaken, presumably, to combat the idea that helmets are totally ancillary to preventing brain injuries in football, and are only meant to protect the skull. Even though it’s finally commonly accepted that chronic brain trauma is a a pervasive issue in football, how to address it still draws heated debates.

The test basically shows that smaller impacts, as well as large ones, will not cause as much damage with the newer helmets. VT has run previous studies rating all helmets currently in use, and provides the definitive and widely cited database of ratings.

Gizmodo has more details about sensors and such, plus a neat .gif image to start things off.
